Coincidentally, everybody in publishing lost their jobs this week. The ghosts of Maxwell Perkins, William Gaines, and Bennett Cerf are going to be busy this holiday season piercing the Veil in order to talk a bunch of pensive, literate drunks out of boiling the bottle of Vicodin into the mulled cider and checking out for good.
(spectrally) "PUT THE PILLLLLLLLS DOWN! THINK ABOUT HOW SOOTHING SUNSETS ARE! AND HOW RELAXED THE BABYYYYYYY TIGGGGGGEEEERRRSSS!"

I could go on and on about what's wrong with modern publishing, but I think this simple object lesson addresses the fundamental issue of why "the market" is so "shaky."
